House Committee on Navy to Investigate Six-Year Detention of Seaman Abbas Haruna

The House of Representatives Committee on Navy has initiated an investigation into the alleged unlawful detention of Seaman Abbas Haruna, who has reportedly been held for almost six years without due process. The detention, allegedly ordered by Brigadier General MS Adamu, has sparked outrage after Haruna’s wife, Mrs. Hussaina Iliyasu, shared her husband’s plight on the popular human rights television program, *Berekete*.

According to Mrs. Iliyasu, Seaman Abbas was deployed in 2018 for a joint military operation in Sarti Baruwa, Taraba State, under the command of Brigadier General Adamu. A disagreement between Abbas and the brigadier general reportedly escalated, leading to his prolonged detention under harsh conditions, without trial, in violation of the Armed Forces Act 2004.

The emotional account given by Mrs. Iliyasu on *Berekete* moved many in the studio to tears and has garnered widespread attention from Nigerians, who have condemned the alleged mistreatment of Seaman Abbas. The public outcry has prompted the House Committee on Navy, chaired by Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, PhD, OON, to step in, pledging to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.

In a statement, the committee vowed to uphold the integrity of the Nigerian military and protect the rights of all personnel in accordance with the law. The committee further emphasized its commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the unlawful detention and mistreatment of Seaman Abbas face the full consequences of their actions.

The investigation will involve liaising with military authorities to hold accountable any officers involved in the gross violation of Seaman Abbas Haruna’s rights, with the aim of preventing such incidents from recurring within the armed forces.

Commander 301 Artillery Regiment Decorates Newly Promoted Senior Officer

The Commander of the 301 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Colonel Abubakar Mohammed, has decorated the Regiment’s Second-in-Command, Major Tonye Ibiama, with his new rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The decoration ceremony, held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Commander’s Office, New Barracks, Gombe, follows the recent promotion of senior officers approved by the Nigerian Army Council and conveyed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations Officer, Captain Mazinho Attah.

In his remarks, Colonel Mohammed described the promotion as a recognition of hard work, dedication, and professionalism. He urged the newly decorated officer to view the elevation as a call to greater responsibility and to continue pursuing personal and professional growth in service to the Nigerian Army.

“The promotion is not just an honor but a challenge to do more,” Colonel Mohammed said.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Honourable Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Bello (Retired), congratulated the celebrant and encouraged him to prepare for greater challenges ahead.

“The journey in the Armed Forces is not measured by distance but by the quality of service,” Bello emphasized.

In his vote of thanks, Lieutenant Colonel Tonye Ibiama expressed gratitude to God Almighty, the Army Council, and the COAS for the confidence reposed in him. He also thanked his Commander for leadership and mentorship and pledged to remain dedicated and hardworking to justify the promotion.
