The Rebuild Arewa Initiative for Development (RAID) held a press conference in Gombe, Northeastern Nigeria, to address concerns over proposed tax reform bills currently being debated in the National Assembly. The bills, which have passed their first and second readings, have sparked controversy across the region.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Balarabe Rufai, the President of the organization, expressed the growing discontent among Northerners regarding the proposed tax reforms. He criticized lawmakers representing the region, suggesting that their support for the bills does not align with the interests of their constituents.

“The North is not with the lawmakers at the National Assembly regarding these tax reform bills. Our people are concerned that these laws could negatively impact our economy and way of life,” Rufai stated.

He further called on political leaders from Northern Nigeria to be aware that their actions are being closely monitored by the public. “Northern political leaders must understand that the people are watching. Their decisions will not go unnoticed, and they must prioritize the welfare of their constituents,” Rufai warned.

The press conference highlighted RAID’s position that the tax reform bills may disproportionately affect Northern states, where poverty rates and economic challenges are more pronounced compared to other regions. The organization urged lawmakers to reconsider their stance and advocate for policies that would promote inclusive economic growth.
