Comrade Mubarakh M Afazazi, Chairman of The Voice of the Voiceless in Nigeria, has called for the immediate resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, citing allegations of corruption, intimidation, and harassment.Afazazi urged the Nigerian Senate to impeach Akpabio if he refuses to step down, insisting that his leadership is detrimental to the country’s democratic progress.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the activist accused Akpabio of gross misconduct, including alleged financial mismanagement and undue influence over lawmakers. He further claimed that the Senate President has been involved in acts of harassment against women and some of his colleagues, making him unfit to lead the legislative arm of government.

“Akpabio is Unfit to Lead the Senate” – Afazazi

According to Afazazi, Akpabio’s past records in public office are tainted with corruption scandals, making it unacceptable for him to continue serving as the head of the Nigerian Senate.

“A person with such a controversial history should not be allowed to occupy such a critical position in our democracy. The Senate must take decisive action and remove him if he fails to resign voluntarily,” Afazazi stated.

Calls for National Unity and Fair Governance

Beyond his criticism of Akpabio, Afazazi called on Nigerians to unite ahead of the 2027 elections and vote wisely without ethnic or religious bias. He emphasized the need for a leadership that prioritizes national interest over personal and regional gains.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must rise above tribal and religious sentiments when making political choices. We need a government that truly represents all Nigerians,” he said.

Additionally, the activist urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address concerns about lopsided appointments in his administration. He warned that the growing perception of favoritism towards a particular region is fueling discontent among citizens.

“Despite widespread complaints, the president continues to favor his region in political appointments. This is unacceptable in a country as diverse as Nigeria. Tinubu must ensure fairness and inclusivity in governance,” Afazazi added.

Growing Calls for Accountability in Government

Afazazi’s call for Akpabio’s resignation comes amid increasing scrutiny of the Senate leadership and broader concerns about governance in Nigeria. Many political observers believe that these allegations, if left unaddressed, could further erode public trust in the country’s legislative institution.

With mounting pressure from civil society groups and opposition voices, all eyes are now on the Senate to see whether lawmakers will take action against Akpabio or whether the embattled Senate President will dismiss the allegations and hold on to his position.
