BREAKING: University of Maiduguri Renamed After President Muhammadu Buhari

In a historic move that has sparked both praise and controversy across Nigeria, the Federal Government has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri after former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement was made public on Wednesday, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, where the decision was unanimously endorsed.

The institution, now officially known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, becomes the first federal university in the North-East to bear the name of a former Nigerian president. According to government sources, the renaming is in recognition of Buhari’s “unwavering commitment to national security, education, and infrastructure development, particularly in the insurgency-ravaged North-East region.”

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who confirmed the development during a press briefing, said:

> “This decision is to immortalize a man who stood firm during one of Nigeria’s most challenging times. President Buhari made enormous sacrifices to restore peace in the North-East and invested heavily in rebuilding education and infrastructure in Borno and its surrounding states.”

The University of Maiduguri, established in 1975, has played a critical role in educational advancement in the North-East. It remained operational during peak periods of Boko Haram insurgency, earning it the title “the institution that refused to close.”

Reactions have poured in from across the country. Supporters of the move describe it as a fitting tribute to a leader who prioritized national security and the rebuilding of educational institutions. Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, lauded the decision, saying:

> “The renaming of this university is not only a recognition of President Buhari’s legacy but also a symbol of resilience for our people.”

However, critics argue that renaming a university should not be driven by politics or sentiments. Some civil society groups and alumni have expressed concern that the move was made without broad consultations.
One alumna, Dr. Hauwa Bukar, shared her concerns online:

> “While we respect the former president, the university’s identity is tied to its roots and history. Renaming it may erase decades of tradition and academic independence.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is yet to release an official statement, but sources within the union suggest internal meetings are being held to review the implications of the decision.

As the nation continues to debate the move, preparations are already underway to update all official university documents, signage, and digital platforms to reflect the new name. A formal unveiling ceremony is expected to take place in Maiduguri later this year, with top dignitaries from across the country in attendance.
