The leadership of the Gombe State University (GSU) Alumni Association has responded to the series of allegations raised in a petition by some concerned members, promising to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the Secretary of the Alumni Association, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Usman, said the Association has resolved to set up a committee to probe the issues raised in the petition. He assured that the committee would act in line with the constitutional provisions of the union and ensure transparency in handling the complaints.

“We have received the petition, and the leadership of the Alumni Association has decided to constitute a committee that will do a thorough investigation into the allegations. The legal sections of the union will act on the matter as required, and once the committee concludes its work, details of their reports will be shared with journalists and stakeholders,” Dr. Usman stated.

Background of the Petition

Last week, a group of concerned alumni submitted a comprehensive petition to the Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University, accusing the Alumni Association’s Executive Council and Board of Trustees (BOT) of constitutional breaches, financial misconduct, and abuse of office.

The petition, dated July 25, 2025, outlined several grievances including unconstitutional tenure elongation of the BOT, irregularities in financial reports, unauthorized appointment of special assistants, politicization of the alumni platform, and unilateral fee hikes.

Copies of the petition were also sent to the Gombe State Attorney General, the Governing Council of GSU, the ICPC, DSS, Nigerian Bar Association, and several civil society groups, calling for urgent intervention to prevent what the petitioners described as “the collapse of the Association’s integrity.”

Next Steps

The committee to be set up by the Alumni Association will be expected to review all the claims, interact with key stakeholders, and recommend corrective measures. Dr. Usman assured that the findings of the committee will be made public.

> “We want to assure all members of the GSU Alumni Association that every voice will be heard. Our objective is to maintain unity, transparency, and adherence to our Constitution,” he added.

Legal and Administrative Response

The Alumni Association’s legal unit is also reportedly reviewing the petition to determine which of the allegations fall under constitutional breaches and what legal remedies or disciplinary measures may be appropriate.

Observers believe this response will either calm tensions or further deepen the crisis depending on how transparent the committee’s findings are and how quickly they are made available to the public.
