A coalition of student and youth associations in Gombe State has strongly condemned the recent killing of a young man by suspected thugs and has called on security agencies to take urgent action against the increasing menace of the notorious “Kalare boys.”

The condemnation came during a joint press conference held in Gombe under the leadership of Usman Wakili, Chairman of the Joint Campus Committee (JCC), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Gombe Axis.

The press conference brought together several student and youth leaders, including:

Fatima Malami, Chairperson, Association of Female Students

Tabitha Babayo, President, National Association of Female Comrades

Muazu Hina, Chairman, Northern Leaders Forum

Muhammed Yarima Garba, Treasurer, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)

Magudu, Chairman, Students’ Union Government (SUG) Presidential Forum, Gombe State

Alamin Muhammed Bako, National President, Gombe State Students’ Association

The groups expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the state, particularly the resurgence of violent youth gangs linked to the “Kalare boys.” They said the killing of a young man, Amadi Kasiran, by unknown assailants has reignited fears among residents and students alike.

> “The peace that Gombe State has long enjoyed is now under threat. We urge all security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to dismantle these criminal gangs. The safety of our communities and campuses must be prioritized,” the student leaders said in a joint statement.

Beyond security concerns, the student leaders also addressed the planned nationwide protest scheduled for June 12, 2025, Democracy Day. They firmly distanced themselves and students across the state from participating in any form of protest that could lead to chaos or further endanger students’ lives.

> “We are appealing to all students in Gombe State to remain calm and avoid involvement in the planned June 12 protests. Our focus should remain on education and academic progress. We will not be part of any disruptive activities,” the coalition declared.

They further urged students to shun distractions, maintain peace on campuses, and resist being used as political tools or agents of violence.

> “Education remains our top priority. No grievance should lead us into actions that could derail our academic calendar or destabilize our peaceful state,” they concluded.

The press conference underscored a unified stance by Gombe’s student community against violence and political manipulation, reaffirming their commitment to peace, academic excellence, and responsible civic engagement.

The appeal was made during a meeting held in Kalmai Ward, Billiri LGA, where members drawn from the 10 wards of the local government gathered to deliberate on the political future of the zone.
