In a dramatic political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Nigeria’s opposition forces have officially united under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring a national mission to “rescue Nigeria, rebuild democracy, and return power to the people.”

Speaking at a high-profile event in Abuja on Tuesday, Chairman of the newly formed National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, Senator David Mark, GCON, unveiled the coalition’s vision, blasting the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government over what he called “a creeping descent into civilian dictatorship, economic hardship, and insecurity.”

The coalition, which brings together diverse opposition political parties, civil society groups, youth organisations and democracy advocates across the six geopolitical zones, pledged to build a viable political alternative under the ADC.

Mark, a former Senate President, minced no words in his criticism of the APC administration, accusing it of undermining democratic institutions, stifling opposition voices, and failing to address insecurity and poverty.

> “We have never seen a government so at home with corruption… so totally consumed with politicking that governance is abandoned, while the majority of our people wallow in hunger and poverty,” he declared.

He further accused the ruling party of reducing the National Assembly to “cheerleaders and praise singers of the President” and warned that Nigeria risks sliding into a one-party state if the opposition fails to act.

ADC: The New Political Platform

After what was described as months of extensive consultations and negotiations, the coalition announced its adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for the 2027 general elections and beyond.

Describing the ADC as a “great house into which all patriots are invited,” he assured that the party would uphold internal democracy, inclusivity, and fairness, adding that all members would be “equal joiners and equal owners.”

He said the new political alignment would bring together all shades of Nigerians: North and South, young and old, farmers and professionals, women and men, urban and rural dwellers.

The Coalition’s Vision

In what many observers see as a declaration of political war ahead of the next electoral cycle, Senator Mark laid out the coalition’s guiding principles:

He affirmed that while the coalition is mindful of ongoing by-elections and state-level contests, all parties involved are committed to rallying under the ADC in 2027.

Addressing Nigerians directly, Mark said the coalition belongs to all citizens who are tired of unfulfilled promises, poverty, insecurity, and dwindling opportunities.

> “To all youths… to the hungry… to those living in fear in Benue, Niger, Zamfara, Plateau, Kaduna, South East, South West and South-South — this coalition is for you.”

He called on Nigerians to rally behind the movement, describing it as a “historic rescue mission” to salvage the nation from misrule and restore faith in democratic governance.

> “Let history record that when our democracy faltered, we rose, not in fear, but in faith. The opposition is united. The platform is ADC. The time is now.”

Reactions and Outlook

The announcement has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape. Analysts say the adoption of ADC signals a serious realignment that could challenge the ruling APC and the traditional dominance of the PDP.

The ADC, though previously considered a fringe party, is now positioned to serve as the main opposition platform — provided the coalition holds firm and consolidates its ranks.

Gara Gombe further noted that some political allies who played roles in Yahaya’s victories still feel neglected and unrewarded. He recommended that the governor organise a Reunion Dinner to reconcile and appreciate his political associates from 2011 to date.

He also alleged that some commissioners, advisers, legislators, and party officials within the governor’s inner circle are already holding secret meetings with opposition figures and considering defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Gara Gombe hinted that he may soon publish their names.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Gombe State has expelled one member and removed three top officials from their positions over alleged anti-party activities and actions deemed detrimental to the unity and stability of the party.

Announcing the decision at a press briefing in Gombe on Tuesday, the State Chairman of the ADC, Malam Auwal Abba Barde, said the measures followed a series of investigations and recommendations by party organs.

Those affected include Nafiu Bala, who was expelled from the party after he recently declared himself as the National Chairman of the ADC. Others removed from their positions are the State Deputy Chairman, Nasiru Lawan; the State Secretary, Danladi Ya’u; and the State Youth Leader, Abdulkadir Sa’idu, popularly known as Digiri.

Barde explained that the recommendation for Bala’s expulsion originated from the Nasarawo Ward Disciplinary Committee, which found him guilty of gross misconduct, factionalization, and anti-party activities.

He noted that Bala was invited personally, and through a publication in a national newspaper, to appear before the committee to defend himself but failed to do so.

“By parading himself as the National Chairman of the ADC, Nafiu Bala not only misrepresented the leadership of the party but also caused serious confusion and division within our ranks,” Barde said.

He added that the State Executive Committee had ratified the ward’s recommendation and would forward the decision to the national leadership of the ADC for further enforcement.

The chairman emphasized that the action was taken to send a strong signal that indiscipline, disloyalty, and sabotage would not be tolerated within the party.

“The committee reviewed the allegations and established that these individuals have consistently acted in ways that undermine the progress of our great party,” he stated.

Barde further assured members that the ADC remained focused and united as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensified.

“As the political drums beat louder ahead of 2027, the ADC is determined to secure more seats in Gombe State and beyond. These incidents are mere stumbles that will not make us fall,” he added.

The development marks one of the most decisive disciplinary measures taken by the ADC in Gombe State in recent years as the party seeks to strengthen its structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
