BREAKING: Police Allegedly Break Sowore’s Hand in Early Morning Raid, Move Him to Undisclosed Location

In a shocking development early Thursday morning, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force reportedly stormed the detention cell of pro-democracy activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, allegedly inflicting serious bodily harm before whisking him away to an undisclosed location.

Sources told Daily Fact that the operation, which occurred at about 6:00 AM at the Force Investigation Department (FID) in Abuja, was led by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) attached to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit.

According to eyewitnesses and legal representatives familiar with the case, the police operatives forcibly entered Sowore’s cell, during which they reportedly broke his right hand in the process of dragging him out. The motive behind the sudden transfer remains unknown, and efforts to trace his current whereabouts have so far been unsuccessful.

“They stormed his cell like criminals, broke his hand, and took him away without any explanation. This is a clear violation of his rights and an act of brutality,” a source close to Sowore’s legal team told Daily Fact.

It is yet unclear why Sowore, a former presidential candidate and fierce critic of government policies, was in custody at the FID facility. However, reports suggest he was earlier arrested and detained under questionable circumstances relating to his ongoing activism.

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have begun raising alarm over the incident, calling for urgent investigation and demanding that the Nigerian Police produce Sowore immediately and ensure he receives medical attention.

Reacting to the reports, a senior police official who spoke on condition of anonymity said he was not aware of the incident but promised to “get details and respond accordingly.”

As of press time, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or the Office of the Inspector General of Police.

Sowore has had several brushes with the Nigerian security agencies in the past, most notably his arrest in 2019 and subsequent prolonged detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court orders granting him bail.

This latest incident raises fresh concerns about freedom of expression, abuse of power by security agencies, and the shrinking civic space in Nigeria.
