APC Tussle in Gombe: Senator Alkali Rejects Controversial Consensus Candidate
By Our Political Reporter
A fresh wave of political tension has hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State as a leading gubernatorial aspirant, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has openly rejected the reported adoption of consensus candidates for the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded statement issued through his media aide, Umar Alkali Jibrin, the senator described the move by some party stakeholders as “undemocratic, arbitrary, and inconsistent” with the Electoral Act, 2026.
The controversy follows a press release allegedly announcing consensus candidates for various elective positions, including governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly seats—an action that has sparked concerns over internal democracy within the ruling party.
Senator Alkali argued that the process violated key provisions of the Electoral Act, particularly Sections 84(1) and 87(1), which mandate the conduct of primaries and require the written consent of all aspirants before adopting a consensus candidate.
According to him, no such consent was sought or obtained, rendering the exercise legally questionable and politically unacceptable.
“It is a clear departure from due process and undermines the democratic principles upon which the party stands,” the statement noted.
The aspirant further emphasized that his purchase of the expression of interest and nomination forms confirms his legitimate status in the race, adding that he cannot be sidelined in decisions of such magnitude.
He maintained that in the absence of unanimous agreement among aspirants, the party is obligated by law to revert to direct primaries, as provided under Section 87(2) of the Electoral Act.
Consequently, Senator Alkali formally dissociated himself from the alleged consensus arrangement, insisting that it lacks both constitutional and legal validity.
He also signaled his readiness to challenge the development through appropriate legal and party mechanisms, while reaffirming his loyalty to the APC and commitment to its victory in the 2027 elections.
Political observers say the development may signal early cracks within the party ahead of the election cycle, raising questions about cohesion and adherence to democratic norms.
Despite the brewing tension, Senator Alkali called on his supporters across Gombe State to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding as efforts continue to ensure fairness and justice within the party.
