GSU Welcomes Over 5,000 New Students at 2024/2025 Matriculation, Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equality and Discipline

Gombe State University (GSU) on Saturday, July 5, officially welcomed thousands of newly admitted students into its academic community during a colourful matriculation and orientation ceremony held at the university campus in Tudun Wada, Gombe.

The event marked the formal admission of undergraduate, postgraduate, and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) students for the 2024/2025 academic session, ushering them into the academic, cultural, and ethical environment of GSU.

In his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, revealed that the institution received 12,660 applications from qualified candidates across Nigeria. Of this number, 5,319 undergraduate students were offered admission after a thorough screening process.

Professor Yauta proudly noted the institution’s commitment to gender inclusion, highlighting that 49% of the newly admitted students are female. “This reflects our unwavering dedication to promoting gender equity and ensuring equal access to higher education for all,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged the students to take full advantage of the resources available to them and to remain focused on their academic goals. “Your journey at GSU begins today. Take it seriously, remain disciplined, and avoid any form of distraction,” he added.

The orientation aspect of the event featured a series of insightful presentations covering crucial topics such as discipline and student conduct, religious harmony, campus security, healthy living, and effective use of library resources.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Rasheed Abdulganiy, addressed the students with a strong message on the importance of personal responsibility and academic focus. “Stay true to your purpose, follow the rules in the Student Handbook, and avoid vices that can derail your progress,” he said.

In a joint message of guidance and caution, Dr. Henry Maina Abareh, University Librarian and Chairman of the Orientation Committee, alongside the Registrar, Dr. Abubakar A. Bafeto, charged the new students to be law-abiding and responsible members of the GSU community.

The ceremony ended on a hopeful note as the university management reaffirmed its dedication to providing a conducive learning environment and nurturing future leaders through quality education and discipline.
