N100m Transfer to Ex-IGP’s Son Was an Error, Funds Returned — Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the controversial N100 million transfer into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was made in error and promptly returned.

The clarification followed an online report which alleged that Victor Egbetokun received N100 million from the Anambra State Government (ANSG) security vote account.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the allegation, describing the transaction as a banking error that was immediately corrected.

Hundeyin explained that upon hearing the allegation, he contacted Victor Egbetokun directly to ascertain the facts.

“You would recall when he (Omoyele Sowore) alleged that N100 million was paid into the account of the IGP’s son. I immediately called the young man to find out what had happened, and he explained,” Hundeyin said during the programme.

According to him, Victor noticed the unexpected credit alert and swiftly instructed his account officer to reverse the transaction.

“He said he saw N100 million in his account and immediately told his account officer to reverse the money, which was done. He printed out his statement of account and showed me. The money was reversed,” Hundeyin stated.

The police spokesperson added that the incident compelled Victor to close the affected bank account and file a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), requesting a thorough investigation into the allegation and circumstances surrounding the transfer.

Hundeyin maintained that the funds were returned to the Anambra State Government’s account shortly after the error was detected, insisting that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the former IGP or his son.

The development comes amid heightened public scrutiny of security vote expenditures and financial transparency in public institutions, with many Nigerians demanding accountability from government officials.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government has not issued an official statement on the matter.
