In a significant step toward enhancing agricultural education and expanding infrastructure at Gombe State University (GSU), the Gombe State Government has officially handed over the premises of Government Senior Secondary School, Malam Sidi, for the establishment of the University’s proposed Faculty of Agriculture.

The handover ceremony began with the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aishatu Umar Maigari, formally transferring the facility to the Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Mohammed Shetima Gadam, who subsequently handed it over to the Acting Vice-Chancellor of GSU, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta.

This development follows the directive of the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, who approved the repurposing of the school facility to support the University’s agricultural expansion drive.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Maigari lauded Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to the development of education in the state. In his remarks, the Commissioner for Higher Education highlighted the importance of the handover, calling it a clear demonstration of the government’s support for academic growth and institutional innovation.

Receiving the facility on behalf of the University, Professor Yauta expressed deep appreciation to the Governor and the state government for what he described as a “landmark contribution” to the University’s future.

“This is a monumental step forward,” said Professor Yauta. “With this facility, we are now well-positioned to establish a Faculty of Agriculture that will not only serve Gombe State but also contribute meaningfully to national agricultural development.”

The new faculty is expected to foster research, innovation, and capacity-building in agricultural science, in line with the state’s broader vision for sustainable development and food security.

The Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) has celebrated its 7th Matriculation Ceremony, admitting 887 students into its academic community.

The event highlighted the institution’s commitment to discipline, academic excellence, and expanding educational opportunities.

Addressing attendees at the university premises, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawan Bala Buratai, welcomed the new students and commended their determination in securing admission amidst intense competition.

“This year, we are matriculating 887 students across six faculties,” he announced. The distribution includes 74 students in the Faculty of Management Sciences, 326 in the Faculty of Computing, 124 in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, 32 in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, 60 in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, and 271 in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Professor Buratai revealed plans to review the university’s cut-off mark to create more opportunities for aspiring students while maintaining NAUB’s high academic standards.

“This reflects our dedication to broadening access to education without compromising the rigor and discipline that define our institution,” he stated.

He urged the new students to abide by the university’s rules and regulations, warning against social vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, and indecent behavior.

The ceremony was graced by His Royal Highness, the Emir of Biu, Alhaji (Dr.) Mustapha Umar Mustapha II, CON, who lauded NAUB for its role in grooming future leaders through quality education.

He encouraged stakeholders to continue supporting the university’s mission.

The event concluded with students pledging to uphold the university’s values and a call for greater collaboration among parents, staff, and the community to ensure NAUB remains a center of excellence.

The Gombe police spokesman said the incident, which resulted from a heated football argument, happened off-campus on Tuesday night.

The Gombe Police Command says 14 suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Abdussamad Musa, a student of Federal University Kashere.

The late Musa was a 200-level student of Criminology and Security Studies of the University.

ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the command spokesman who confirmed the arrest to journalists on Friday, said four others in connection with the incident were at large.

Mr Abdullahi said the incident, which resulted from a heated football argument, happened off-campus on Tuesday night, and the knife used in the murder of Mr Musa was recovered as an exhibit.

He said the investigation had since begun, and upon conclusion, the matter would be charged to court for prosecution.

According to him, efforts are on to arrest the other four suspects who are currently on the run.

He said the command had taken adequate measures to forestall further occurrences and protect property in line with the directive of the state’s commissioner of police, CP Hayatu Usman.

The spokesperson advised youths and residents of the state to be mindful of their discussion in public. He said any discussion in a tense atmosphere should be avoided.

“Football is meant to entertain and not to take the lives of anyone, so we should avoid arguments that may create chaos and cause conflicts, especially amongst youths,” he said.

Janet Ibrahim, the public relations officer of FUK, told journalists that the incident occurred on Tuesday around 7:00 p.m.

Ms Ibrahim said the incident resulted from a minor disagreement between two groups after a football match off campus.

She said initially, the disagreement was resolved amicably, but the other group later attacked the compound where the deceased lived, and they engaged in a fight.

“This resulted in the stabbing of the deceased on his neck with a knife, and he was rushed to the general hospital, Kashere, where he later died due to excessive bleeding, as confirmed by a medical doctor,” he said.

She said the parents were invited, and they came on Wednesday and took part in the funeral service for the deceased around 2:00 p.m.

According to her, normalcy had since returned to the affected community.

Ms Ibrahim said that the institution does not have control over what happens off campus but was collaborating with security agencies and community leaders to protect students staying off campus.

According to eyewitnesses, the dispute began earlier in the day, but escalated when a group of students returned to the scene, leading to a confrontation that ended in tragedy.

A friend to the deceased, Aliyu Usman, from the department of Political Science told Journalists that the argument began over a football dispute which” the students dispersed but later another group returned which made the area noisy. People were coming out from their residences and upon coming out, it led to a confrontation where Abdulsamad was stabbed around his neck.”

The Students Representative Council of the University (SRC) has condemned the incident and vowed to pursue justice, working closely with security authorities to ensure the perpetrators face punishment.
