Commissioner Hayatu Usman emphasizes rehabilitation over punitive measures, promoting a holistic approach
In a proactive move to address security concerns and rehabilitate youth, Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, received over 126 repentant thugs, known locally as “Kalare Boys.” This strategic initiative comes after approximately 50 individuals voluntarily surrendered in December 2023.
Commissioner Hayatu Usman emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, stating that a holistic approach is necessary to address the root causes of youth involvement in activities that compromise security. Thorough vetting processes, counseling sessions, and collaboration with community leaders and social workers are in place to ensure the genuine intention of the repentant youths.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to channel the energy of these individuals into positive endeavors, fostering their reintegration into society. The Commissioner’s commitment to rehabilitation aligns with broader efforts to address the socioeconomic factors influencing youth engagement in criminal activities.
In a remarkable event at the Gombe Police Headquarters, Sheikh Hamza Adamu Abdulhamid, Chairman of the Council of Ulama’u in the IZALAH organization, delivered a powerful sermon encouraging the Kalare Boys to surrender their weapons and embrace a life of positive contribution to society.
The collaboration between religious leaders, law enforcement, and community figures signifies a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced in Gombe metropolitan areas. It aims not only to rehabilitate repentant individuals but also to prevent the recurrence of security issues.
The recent registration of repentant Kalare Boys who surrendered willingly has become a significant step forward in addressing security challenges in Gombe. These individuals, associated with various camps, have chosen a different path for their futures. The transformative event at the Gombe State Police Command saw the active involvement of DCP Yusuf Yelwa, Alhaji Aliyu Babangida, Comrade Abba Pantami, and Haji Shehu.
DCP Yusuf Yelwa highlighted the importance of community engagement and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. Alhaji Aliyu Babangida emphasized the role of community leaders, while Comrade Abba Pantami contributed insights into socioeconomic factors influencing youth involvement in criminal activities. Haji Shehu conveyed the state government’s commitment to supporting initiatives fostering peace and security.
This collaborative effort aims to create a safer environment, emphasizing community engagement as a key element in the overall strategy for lasting change. The hope is to build a community where repentant individuals can become positive contributors, ensuring a more secure and harmonious Gombe State.

BREAKING: Hamma Saleh Resigns From PDP, Cites Personal Reasons
Gombe PDP Faces Fresh Political Challenge as Governorship Aspirant Quits Party
By Our Political Correspondent
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has suffered a fresh political setback following the resignation of one of its prominent grassroots politicians and governorship aspirants, Alhaji Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh.
Hamma Saleh announced his resignation from the party in a letter dated October 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman in Gombe State and the Chairman of the party in Nafada Local Government Area.
The letter, titled “Notification of Resignation,” was routed through the PDP Ward Chairman of Nafada West.
In the letter, Hamma Saleh said his decision to leave the party was based on personal reasons.
> “I wish to humbly notify you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on personal grounds,” he stated.
He thanked the party before signing the letter as Alhaji Abdulkadir Hamma Saleh (Hamsal).
The resignation comes at a critical period for the PDP in Gombe State, as political parties intensify preparations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Hamma Saleh is known as a prominent grassroots politician in the state and was among those who expressed interest in the PDP governorship contest.
His departure is therefore expected to attract considerable political attention, particularly given his reported network of supporters across the state’s 114 wards and 11 Local Government Areas.
Political observers say the resignation could have implications for the PDP’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, especially if some of Hamma Saleh’s supporters decide to follow him out of the party.
As a politician with a considerable grassroots following and a reported role in supporting the activities of the party, his exit could potentially affect the PDP’s organisational strength in some areas of the state.
There are also expectations that the development may trigger further political realignments as politicians and supporters assess their positions ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Hamma Saleh did not disclose whether he intends to join another political party, leaving his next political move open to speculation.
He has, however, appealed to his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, assuring them that he would disclose his next political ambition at the appropriate time.
The former governorship aspirant urged his supporters not to be distracted by the development, as he prepares to communicate his next political direction.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official reaction from the Gombe State PDP leadership or the party’s Nafada Local Government chapter regarding the resignation.
The development is likely to generate reactions among PDP stakeholders and political supporters across Gombe State, particularly in Nafada and other areas where Hamma Saleh has established political structures and relationships.
His resignation adds another layer to the evolving political landscape in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties expected to intensify consultations, mobilisation and realignment in the coming months.
